Icy poles and ice baths as Vingegaard claims yellow

Jonas Vingegaard has claimed the first yellow jersey of the Tour de France, securing a crucial early lead in the opening 19-kilometer team time trial held in Barcelona. His Visma Lease a Bike team delivered a dominant performance, finishing 12 seconds ahead of their main rival, two-time defending champion Tadej Pogačar, whose UAE Emirates XRG team secured third place.

Despite Pogačar being the fastest on the final climb and earning the polka dot jersey for the second stage, Vingegaard expressed satisfaction with the "perfect start." He credited his teammates for their exceptional effort in the team time trial, emphasizing their sacrifices that propelled him to the victory and the coveted yellow jersey. This marks Vingegaard's return to wearing the leader's jersey after a few challenging years.

The race began with an innovative team time trial format, the first since 1971, where each rider received an individual finishing time. Teams adopted unique strategies to cope with the blistering 30-degree Celsius heat, with some riders placing their arms in iced water and others sucking on icy poles during their warm-up.

I would say it's the perfect start. My teammates did an amazing job today … I didn't have to do much to be honest, they drove me all the way to the finish. It's an amazing victory for us, especially when it's a team time trial when I had seven teammates who sacrificed for me today. To take the yellow jersey, after a few years without it, a few hard years, it's nice to experience it again.

Race officials are now equipped to cancel stages if a red heatwave alert is issued, according to a French Interior Ministry document. This measure aims to safeguard spectators and staff, as well as ensure the continued provision of emergency services, in exceptional circumstances. Temperatures are forecast to reach up to 39 degrees Celsius in Carcassonne, a host city for an upcoming stage.

Vingegaard acknowledged the long distance remaining in the race, over 3,000 kilometers, but emphasized the psychological advantage gained from this initial success. He described the start as beyond his dreams, setting the stage for what is anticipated to be a tense battle with his Slovenian rival throughout the three-week event.
