IDF Boosts West Bank Deployment Amid Sharp Rise in Violence

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have bolstered their presence in the West Bank, increasing deployment to 26 battalions amid a significant escalation of violence. This surge includes Palestinian terrorist attacks and a rise in violent actions by extremist settlers, The Jerusalem Post has learned. The reinforcement follows Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's order for increased troop deployments, additional checkpoints, and expanded counterterrorism operations.

The heightened security measures were initiated after a deadly shooting near Gilad Farm on Friday. According to the IDF, the incident began when Israeli civilians entered Palestinian Authority-controlled territory without military coordination. A confrontation ensued, during which a Palestinian reportedly seized a weapon and opened fire, killing Master-Sgt. (res.) Benayahu Melet and Maj. Yuval Ezra. The Palestinian shooter was also killed, and Palestinian officials reported four additional Palestinian fatalities during the broader confrontation, though the exact circumstances remain under investigation.

This shooting followed a stabbing attack near Elon Moreh on Thursday, where 51-year-old Itamar Cohen was seriously wounded while attempting to extinguish a fire allegedly set by residents of a nearby Palestinian village. Two Palestinian attackers were killed at the scene. Further incidents occurred on Saturday, with an off-duty soldier and another Israeli injured in a separate confrontation near Susiya Junction, where a Palestinian allegedly threw stones and took a weapon. In the early hours of Sunday, a mosque in the village of Kusra was set on fire by Israelis, with graffiti including "Revenge for Benay" found at the scene.

The IDF's increased deployment is a response to the rapidly shifting security situation. While the exact number of forces is not static and subject to operational assessments, the reinforcement aims to address the escalating violence. The military is expected to respond to violations of the law, but the distribution of forces is based on broader situational assessments. It remains unclear if the additional deployment will be sustained throughout the summer as the situation continues to be reassessed.
