IDF: Even after two Iran wars, it will take 30 years to provide safe rooms nationwide

Even after enduring two major wars with Iran and years of missile attacks, Israel's Home Front Command estimates it will take more than three decades to equip the entire nation with safe rooms. Currently, only 67% of the population has access to such protective spaces. The projected rate for switching over to safe rooms and building new ones is approximately 1% per year.

The military's most ambitious scenario suggests a growth rate of 3% per year for safe spaces. However, even at this accelerated pace, significant portions of the country would remain vulnerable to Iranian ballistic missiles and other aerial attacks for at least another 11 years. There is currently no plan under consideration to achieve full nationwide protection within a two-to-five-year timeframe.

The IDF Home Front Command conveyed that no entity appears willing to undertake the large-scale emergency rebuilding necessary for rapid nationwide protection. Such an undertaking would require significant temporary displacement of residents and potentially large-scale demolitions of existing unprotected homes to facilitate the construction of new units equipped with safe spaces. Despite over 50 Israelis killed by Iranian ballistic missiles in under a year, thousands wounded, and extensive property damage, the IDF perceives the burden of an emergency program as greater than the ongoing risk of continued attacks.
