IDF maintains high alert amid US-Iran talks, reduces reservist numbers

Despite ongoing updates regarding potential negotiations between the United States and Iran, top Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) officers confirmed on Sunday that several military branches have reduced the number of reserve soldiers stationed at the General Staff's headquarters. Some officers have been instructed to remain alert for potential recall to service but are not required to report to headquarters at this time.

Senior IDF officials believe Israel's political leadership has been excluded from the core discussions of the US-Iran negotiations. They note that it remains unclear whether genuine progress is being made or if the parties are primarily engaged in strategic pressure tactics. Concurrently, the head of Military Intelligence, Maj.-Gen. Shlomi Binder, is leading efforts to understand Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' (IRGC) attempts to restore military capabilities damaged during recent operations.

The IDF has not dismissed the possibility of Iran launching a preemptive surprise attack, particularly if Tehran perceives that the White House might abandon negotiations in favor of resuming strikes against Iran. Such an attack could involve ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. Consequently, any unusual activity in the region is being meticulously monitored.

A senior IDF officer stated that the defense establishment is maintaining a high level of alert for several days, ensuring readiness for a potential shift in political decisions regarding renewed attacks. Simultaneously, the IDF is actively preparing for a surprise attack scenario. The assessment within the defense establishment is that the current Iranian regime, led by Mojtaba Khamenei, is unlikely to abandon its nuclear ambitions, viewing them as essential for its survival. Any compromise on nuclear issues with the US might be seen as a temporary delay rather than a fundamental shift.
