IDF's Gaza strikes interfere with BoP efforts to disarm Hamas, give medical care, Mladenov implies

Nickolay Mladenov, Director-General of the Board of Peace (BoP) and High Representative for Gaza, suggested Sunday that Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) strikes in the Gaza Strip are hindering peace efforts. Mladenov noted that "two days of strikes across Gaza have killed civilians and destroyed medical supplies that people depend on."

Mladenov's team is currently focused on disarming "Palestinian factions" in Gaza and implementing a civilian government. He stressed that both Israel and the "Palestinian factions" have obligations under a peace deal that must be met. "My team and I are working around the clock with the parties, the mediators and regional partners to de-escalate and create the space for the full implementation of the [US] President's plan," he said, adding that achieving lasting peace requires maximum effort from all sides.

Mladenov's comments followed an IDF announcement that it had killed two Hamas commanders over the weekend. The IDF also reported killing three terrorists from separate groups in Gaza over the past week. Meanwhile, senior White House and BoP officials told The Jerusalem Post on Friday that they expect Israel to adhere to the 20-point plan it initially agreed upon, expressing disappointment if it does not.
