IIT Guwahati student drowns in Brahmaputra; another rescued

A third-year BTech student at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-G) tragically drowned in the Brahmaputra River on Saturday evening. The incident occurred near Lathia Bagicha Ghat, according to police reports on Sunday.

One of the students was rescued within around 20 minutes, while the body of the other student was recovered after nearly three hours of searching.

Another student, who was with the deceased when they fell into the river, was rescued shortly after the incident. Local sailors and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team were instrumental in the rescue efforts. While one student was pulled from the water within 20 minutes, the body of the other student was recovered after approximately three hours of searching.

IIT Guwahati issued a statement expressing profound grief and deep sorrow over the "untimely demise" of the student from the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering. The institute has informed the student's parents and requested them to visit the campus. They are also extending full cooperation and assistance to the family and the ongoing police investigation.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Kamrup), Kalyan Pathak, confirmed that police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the drowning. The institute has also urged students, faculty, and staff to exercise extreme caution around water bodies, especially during the monsoon season, and to avoid hazardous locations. IIT-G plans to enhance its safety communications and issue frequent advisories regarding the dangers of approaching rivers and other unsafe water bodies.
