Ilhan Omar questions federal agent's presence outside Minnesota town hall

U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar has raised concerns after a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agent was reportedly stationed outside her monthly town hall meeting in Richfield, Minnesota. Omar detailed the incident in a letter addressed to Michael McCarthy, interim special agent in charge of HSI's St. Paul office.

Instead of monitoring the area for those who might wish harm to me and my constituents, Richfield Police were required to devote time to investigating why an HSI agent was outside of a Congressional event in a vehicle with mismatched plates.

The situation unfolded when a Richfield police officer noticed a woman in a Ford Explorer observing the community center where the meeting was held. Suspicious of her behavior, the officer ran the vehicle's plates, discovering they were registered to a different car. Upon approaching the woman, she initially identified herself as security but later revealed she was an HSI agent involved in an undercover drug operation in the area.

Omar's letter highlighted that the presence of the HSI agent diverted Richfield police resources. Instead of focusing on security for her and her constituents, officers had to investigate the agent's suspicious activity. She questioned the purpose of the agent's presence outside her event and noted the lack of prior communication from HSI to local law enforcement regarding the undercover operation.

It also raises serious and uncomfortable questions about the purpose of HSI's presence outside of my event.

According to Omar's letter, the Richfield Police Department stated they had received no advance notice of the operation, which would have allowed them to coordinate safety measures and support HSI's anti-drug trafficking efforts. Omar is seeking an explanation from McCarthy regarding the agent's positioning, how HSI became aware of the meeting, and the agent's training. She also requested information on any other Minnesota officials or events HSI agents may have monitored this year.

I understand that she initially identified herself as security, and after Richfield Police confirmed with my security team that she was not part of our operation, she called her supervisor and explained that she was an HSI agent and was outside the community center as part of an undercover drug operation in the area.
