Illegal Imports of Obesity Drugs Surge 3.5 Times in South Korea

South Korea has seen a dramatic increase in the illegal importation of popular obesity treatments Wegovy and Mounjaro, with over 4,000 cases detected in the first six months of 2024 alone. This figure represents a 3.5-fold jump compared to the 1,189 cases detected throughout the entire previous year.

The primary method for these illicit imports is through postal services, accounting for 84% of the detected cases, totaling 3,489. This trend suggests a widespread practice of individuals purchasing medications through online channels and receiving them via mail delivery. Attempts to smuggle the drugs through traveler's baggage also occurred, with 656 cases recorded, while only 10 cases involved express cargo.

According to customs regulations, while certain quantities of medication are permissible for personal use, Wegovy and Mounjaro are classified as 'harmful substances' by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. Consequently, any quantity detected during customs clearance is subject to immediate disposal, unless accompanied by an 'import requirement confirmation waiver recommendation' from the ministry.

In stark contrast to the illegal imports, only 391 cases of Wegovy and Mounjaro were officially imported and cleared through customs with the necessary regulatory approvals during the same period. This disparity underscores the significant demand for these medications and the prevalence of unofficial channels. Officials attribute the surge in illegal imports to the drugs' increasing popularity and widespread recognition following their official launch in South Korea: Wegovy in October 2023 and Mounjaro in August of the same year.
