Illinois aims to install 'many more' EV charging stations

Illinois has launched its first federally funded electric vehicle fast-charging station in Casey, marking a significant step in the state's transition to electric mobility. The station utilizes funding from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program.

Gia Biagi, Illinois Secretary of Transportation, inaugurated the station and expressed her commitment to rapidly expanding the EV charging infrastructure. She highlighted the strategic importance of these chargers, particularly for rural communities, which are showing strong interest in this technology. Biagi noted that travelers stopping to charge also patronize local businesses, providing an economic boost.

Part of the interestest strongest that we see comes from rural areas that see the benefit of travelers stopping in their towns.

The NEVI program in Illinois is allocating $23.5 million for 29 projects that will create 140 charging ports along the interstate highway system. Each new location must feature at least four DC fast-charging ports capable of charging an EV from empty to 80% in under 30 minutes. This initiative supports Governor J.B. Pritzker's ambitious target of having one million electric vehicles on Illinois roads by 2030, positioning the state as a leader in EV technology manufacturing and deployment.
