IMF reportedly names Álvaro Piris mission chief for Venezuela

Álvaro Piris Chavarri, an economist with extensive experience in crisis management and stabilization, has reportedly been appointed as the new head of the International Monetary Fund's mission for Venezuela. This move signals a significant step in the ongoing process of normalizing technical relations between the multilateral organization and the South American nation.

The appointment, as reported by Bloomberg, comes shortly after the IMF confirmed the re-establishment of formal contacts with Venezuela. This decision, backed by a majority of member countries, opens the door for potential economic evaluations and a resumption of regular consultations. The IMF has been gradually resuming technical dialogue with Venezuelan authorities, marking the most sustained engagement since relations were interrupted in 2019.

Piris, who currently serves as the IMF's mission chief in Ethiopia, has a background in leading financial assistance programs and negotiating structural reforms. His previous work has involved technical missions in various regions, particularly in Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe, focusing on economies facing vulnerability and fiscal restructuring.

The renewed engagement between the IMF and Venezuela is occurring in parallel with international discussions about the country potentially regaining access to technical and financial assistance.
