Landgren emphasized that this situation is especially dangerous in dementia care. Even minor misunderstandings can cause significant anxiety and uncertainty for elderly patients. She provided a common example: a caregiver once confused shampoo with hand sanitizer, illustrating the potential for serious errors due to language barriers.

While the new regulations acknowledge these challenges, they do not demand immediate full language proficiency upon hiring. Instead, employers are obligated to create conditions for gradual language development. There are no strict timelines for achieving this, but the expected level is roughly equivalent to intermediate Swedish proficiency.
