Imo Politicians Urged to Embrace Issue-Based Campaigns

A Nigerian media pressure group has called on politicians in Imo State to conduct themselves responsibly and uphold democratic principles ahead of the 2027 political campaigns. Integrity Media Group urged politicians to avoid character assassination and instead focus on issue-based campaigns.

In a statement released in Owerri, the group's Director, Ugochukwu Eme, emphasized that politics should not be viewed as a 'do-or-die affair.' He warned that unhealthy attacks, hate speech, and campaigns of calumny undermine peace, unity, and democratic progress. The group asserted that democracy flourishes through tolerance, mutual respect, and a focus on substantive issues, rather than personal animosity.

Integrity Media Group stressed the importance of leaders presenting their visions and programs to the electorate. They cautioned against divisive politics that could escalate tensions within the polity. "Politics is a contest of ideas and service, not a battlefield for hatred, blackmail, and destruction of character," the statement read. The group believes Nigerians deserve mature leadership that fosters unity, peace, and development.

Furthermore, the organization appealed to political parties, youth groups, and community leaders to actively promote peaceful coexistence. They urged these stakeholders to discourage inflammatory statements that could incite unrest. The call aims to foster a more constructive and responsible political environment in Imo State.
