Impersonator Jeon Cheong-jo gets additional jail time for fraud

Jeon Cheong-jo, who is currently imprisoned for a multi-billion won fraud case involving impersonating a "chaebol" heir, faces an extended prison term due to further fraudulent activities. The Cheongju District Court sentenced Jeon, 29, to an additional 10 months in prison for crimes committed after her initial conviction.

Previously, Jeon had received a two-month suspended sentence for offenses predating her current incarceration. The court's decision reflects a pattern of deceitful behavior, even while under legal scrutiny. The fraudster had previously contacted a victim in May 2019, promising substantial returns on investments and subsequently extracting funds under various pretenses.

Further investigations revealed that Jeon continued her fraudulent schemes. Between July and August 2022, while on parole, she defrauded the same victim of approximately 80.86 million won across 24 separate transactions. These scams involved luring the victim with promises of lucrative overseas investments, requiring upfront fees for the supposed repatriation of funds, and exploiting the victim's trust for personal gain.
