In His Father’s Name: Umahi’s Son Sworn In as Ebonyi Local Government Chairman

Osborne Umahi has entered elective politics carrying a surname that opens doors in Ebonyi State and invites immediate scrutiny. The son of Works Minister Senator David Umahi was sworn in as a local government chairman, beginning a new chapter for a family name that has long carried political weight.

His route to office did not rely solely on his father’s political machinery. Umahi left Nigeria for the United Kingdom at 15 and returned with a civil engineering degree from the University of Surrey at 21. He later earned a master’s degree in Finance and Investment Management from the University of Aberdeen, building a corporate profile before turning to elected office.

That experience includes serving as managing director of Brass Oil and Construction Limited, which handles road projects, infrastructure work and downstream petroleum stations across Nigeria. He also chairs Tyneside Oil & Gas, an upstream venture, and serves as director of finance at Forte GCC Innovative Solutions, managing a portfolio covering real estate, stocks and bonds.

Umahi has also built a hospitality business outside his family’s traditional political and business footprint. He founded Osborn La Palm Royal Resort, which expanded into a five-star chain in Port Harcourt, Abuja and Abakaliki. Through the Osborn Foundation, he has donated books to schools in Kano and paid secondary school tuition for indigent students in Ebonyi.

Those achievements will not settle the question of whether he can govern effectively at the grassroots. A local government chairman must answer to market women, farmers and communities seeking working roads, clinics and basic services. The ceremonies will soon recede, leaving the roads repaired, services delivered and local trust earned as the measures of his tenure.
