In Mexico, 'football' is written without an accent

In Mexico, the popular sport is consistently spelled 'futbol,' omitting the accent mark typically found in Spanish. This linguistic adaptation stems from the word's direct incorporation from English, where it retains a stressed final syllable pronunciation.

Dr. Niktelol Palacios, a linguist from El Colegio de México, explains that this Mexican adaptation maintains a phonetic pronunciation closer to the original English loanword. This contrasts with Spain and much of South America, where the word is pronounced with stress on the penultimate syllable, 'fútbol,' and thus written with a graphic accent according to standard Spanish orthographic rules.

"Rather than a conscious act of resistance against the Spanish of Spain, the case is interesting because it shows that linguistic norms are dynamic and that different Spanish-speaking communities adapt loanwords in different ways," Palacios stated. "Each tradition develops its own legitimate uses, and they can coexist."

Dr. Luis Fernando Lara, another linguist, added that the Diccionario del Español de México typically lists entries based on the most common pronunciation. "In our Dictionary of Mexican Spanish, we usually place the entry according to the most common pronunciation: 'futbol' without an accent," he said.
