In Rebulding Security, Tinubu Expands Army to 12 Divisions, 28 Thousand New Men

President Bola Tinubu has approved a significant restructuring of the Nigerian Army, expanding its structure from eight to 12 divisions. This strategic move is designed to bolster the nation's security architecture and enhance the operational effectiveness of the army in addressing Nigeria's evolving security challenges.

The expansion is part of the administration's broader commitment to strengthening national defence capabilities. It builds upon sustained investments in the armed forces, including the approval for recruiting an additional 28,000 personnel. The initiative also involves acquiring critical military platforms and equipment, improving troop welfare, and supporting operational readiness and force modernization.

Under the new structure, the 12 divisions will be strategically positioned across the country. New divisional headquarters will be established in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo, and Benin City. These additions are expected to significantly improve command and control, decentralize operational decision-making, strengthen border security, enhance the protection of critical national infrastructure, and ensure faster military responses to emerging threats.

The implementation of this new force structure will occur in two phases. The first phase, encompassing the establishment of the 5th, 9th, and 10th Divisions and the reorganization of existing formations, is slated for completion by September 2026. The second phase, involving the establishment of the 83rd Division and further reorganization, is expected to be finalized by December 2026. President Tinubu commended the Chief of Army Staff and all officers and soldiers for their dedication to defending the nation's sovereignty.
