In ‘The Mystery of the Yellow Room,’ Joséphine Rouletabille Takes on the Investigation

The locked-room mystery returns with a new investigator at its center. In TF1’s latest adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s The Mystery of the Yellow Room, the fearless young reporter Joseph Rouletabille becomes Joséphine, or “Jo,” played by Claire Romain.

The essential question remains unchanged: how could Mathilde have been attacked inside a room that was completely locked? That puzzle, which made Leroux’s novel a classic of crime fiction, anchors the new mini-series.

The adaptation updates the original formula without abandoning its foundations. Joséphine is alerted to the attack on her best friend, Mathilde, and returns to her native village. Along the way, she meets Théod, a podcaster who joins her investigation.

Leroux, a master of the serial novel, has seen The Mystery of the Yellow Room adapted five times before. The most recent prominent version was Bruno Podalydès’ film from 2003. This time, the familiar story becomes a polished mini-series that gives its central reporter a new identity while preserving the impossible crime at its core.
