Incendiary attack targets German defense company site; two Bulgarians detained in Munich

Two Bulgarian citizens have been detained in Munich after incendiary devices were thrown from a moving car at a construction site opposite the headquarters of defense technology company Rohde & Schwarz.

The incident took place around midnight in the Berg am Laim district. A witness alerted police after seeing two devices thrown toward the site. One caught fire near construction containers, but a patrol quickly extinguished it. The second device was found nearby without exploding and was neutralized by members of Bavaria’s criminal police special forces. The area was sealed during the operation.

A 28-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man were later found at a nearby gas station and arrested. Their connection to the attack remains under investigation. Bavarian police confirmed that they are examining suspected arson with a possible political motive, but said there is currently no evidence that Rohde & Schwarz itself was specifically targeted. Authorities have not provided details about a possible motive.

The company confirmed that an incident occurred at a construction site near its headquarters. Rohde & Schwarz develops communications systems and security technologies used by government institutions and Germany’s armed forces. Police said the attack caused no significant damage and no injuries.

The company faced a similar sabotage incident in 2021, when unidentified people set fire to an exposed power line near one of its facilities. A letter later published online described the company as a “defense contractor.” That incident remains unsolved and caused a power outage.
