Incivilities and Waste Hamper TGM Line Modernization

The Tunis public transport company, Transtu, is sounding the alarm over persistent incivilities and waste accumulation that are obstructing the modernization of the TGM line, which connects Tunis to La Goulette and Marsa.

Repeated dumping of household waste and debris along the tracks and within stations is undermining the work of technical teams and slowing down renovation projects, particularly at the Tunis-Marine, Hannibal, Carthage, and Amilcar stations. Transtu highlights its significant human and logistical investments in maintaining this historic and tourist-important network, with specialized teams working around the clock on cleaning, track weeding, and improving passenger areas.

Despite these continuous efforts, the infrastructure remains a target for anti-social behavior from nearby residents and businesses. In response to recent illegal dumping incidents, Transtu is adopting a firm stance. In coordination with security and local authorities, legal proceedings will now be initiated against anyone involved in damaging equipment or endangering train circulation. The company renews its appeal for civic responsibility, urging civil society, neighborhood committees, and local authorities to raise awareness among residents to help preserve the cleanliness of the railway domain and ensure the quality of public service.
