Increased chance of ceasefire in Gaza

There is an increased possibility of a ceasefire in Gaza, as Hamas has reportedly agreed to lay down its arms in exchange for an Israeli withdrawal from the territory. This proposal echoes a similar agreement from the previous year, which, however, did not come to fruition.

Last October, hopes were high when then-President Donald Trump facilitated a ceasefire agreement. The terms stipulated that Hamas would be disarmed, and the Israeli military would withdraw from Gaza. Additionally, substantial humanitarian aid was to be allowed into the coastal strip, which was then intended to be governed by a Palestinian technocratic administration. The ultimate goal was to end the ongoing conflict and loss of life.

However, nine months have elapsed since these initial hopes were raised, and none of the critical components of the proposed deal have been realized. The disarmament of Hamas, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the influx of humanitarian aid, and the establishment of a Palestinian technocratic government remain unfulfilled.
