Indecopi probes Innova Schools over alleged inaction in student abuse case, fines could reach $670,000

Peru's National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Intellectual Property (Indecopi) is investigating the private school Innova Schools after parents reported the institution's alleged inaction regarding sexual violence against a student on campus.

Indecopi stated it is gathering information to determine if the school followed applicable protocols and obligations. This includes assessing compliance with the Code of Protection and Defense of Consumers and the specific duty of suitability for educational services.

If Innova Schools is found to have breached regulations, it could face an administrative sanctioning procedure. This could result in fines up to 450 tax units (UIT), equivalent to S/2.475 million (approximately $670,000 USD), and require corrective measures for consumers.

Indecopi emphasized that educational service providers must intervene immediately and diligently in any violence situation. They are obligated to provide assistance and protection to victims according to Ministry of Education protocols and report incidents through the SiseVe portal.
