India and Argentina Boost Trade Ties, Eyeing Pharma and Farm Market Access

India and Argentina are strengthening their economic partnership, focusing on expanding market access for key Indian exports. The two nations have agreed to intensify efforts to facilitate the entry of Indian pharmaceutical and agricultural products into Argentina.

Technical discussions are currently underway regarding agricultural exports, including onions, milk products, grapes, bananas, and pulses. Simultaneously, Argentina is committed to upgrading India's status within its pharmaceutical regulatory framework. This move is expected to significantly benefit Indian pharmaceutical companies by reducing barriers and improving access for their medicines in the Argentine market.

These developments were discussed during the fourth India-Argentina Joint Trade Committee (JTC) meeting in Buenos Aires. The meeting highlighted the robust growth in bilateral trade, which surpassed USD 6.5 billion in 2025, marking an annual increase of over 17 percent. India now ranks as Argentina's fifth-largest trading partner, indicating substantial potential for further trade expansion.

Beyond pharmaceuticals and agriculture, the JTC also explored investment opportunities in sectors such as mining, energy, and infrastructure. India's KABIL initiative is actively involved in Argentina's lithium sector, with ongoing drilling projects and further exploration in other regions. Cooperation in advanced fields like aviation, space technology, telecommunications, and digital services, including 5G and artificial intelligence, was also identified as a priority.

The discussions also touched upon the India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement, with advancements in its Terms of Reference and the adoption of digital certificates of origin anticipated to streamline cross-border trade. The JTC was followed by a business forum, where a large Indian delegation engaged with Argentine counterparts to convert government-level agreements into tangible business partnerships across various sectors.
