India and China Hold Border Talks in Arunachal Pradesh

Indian and Chinese army commanders held their first corps commander-level meeting in Arunachal Pradesh’s eastern sector since the countries’ special representatives met in Beijing on the boundary dispute.

The talks took place on Sunday at the Wacha-Damai border meeting point in the Kibithoo sector. They focused on issues along the Line of Actual Control, including measures to preserve peace and tranquillity along the border, people familiar with the matter said. Lieutenant General Girish Kalia, commander of the Dimapur-based 3 Corps, led the Indian delegation. The Indian Army did not comment.

The meeting followed the 25th round of talks between India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who serve as the countries’ special representatives on the boundary issue. Their Beijing discussions produced eight points of consensus, including two additional locations for senior military commander meetings intended to improve border management.

Sunday’s engagement also came after tensions reportedly emerged between Indian and Chinese troops in Taksin, a remote area of Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Subansiri district. The status of that standoff remains unclear. People familiar with the situation previously said the troops had several face-offs there and that the situation became more serious toward the end of July.

India has stressed that peace and tranquillity along the border are essential to the continued development of bilateral relations. The latest talks form part of efforts to stabilize ties after the 2020 military confrontation in eastern Ladakh, which pushed relations to their lowest point since the 1962 border war. The Beijing meeting was the third between the special representatives since the two countries reached an understanding in October 2024 to end the Ladakh standoff.
