India dominate 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Champs

India has asserted its dominance at the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos, Nigeria, amassing an impressive 17 gold, 13 silver, and 13 bronze medals with two days left in the competition. The Indian contingent has showcased exceptional performance across all three fencing disciplines, epee, sabre, and foil, outperforming competitors from Australia, England, Wales, South Africa, and the host nation, Nigeria.

Adding to their success, Indian athletes have also secured medals in the newly introduced wheelchair fencing events. Both the Indian men's and women's teams have reached the podium, with the veteran category events still to be contested. England currently holds the second position on the medal table with two gold, two silver, and nine bronze medals, followed by Nigeria and Cyprus in the top four.

Nigeria has marked a significant achievement at these championships, with 17-year-old Oghenegaren Osievwo-Thompson clinching the country's first-ever international fencing gold medal in the men's U-23 epee event. Oluwafolayemi Akinyosoye also contributed a bronze medal in the men's sabre. Furthermore, Nigeria's wheelchair fencing team secured two silver and eight bronze medals, marking the host nation's most successful outing in the sport to date.

Cyprus, represented by a single athlete, managed to win a gold medal. Australia has collected two silver and three bronze medals, while South Africa has two silver and one bronze. Northern Ireland and Wales have each earned a bronze medal. With the competition nearing its conclusion, India remains firmly at the top of the medal standings, underscoring their commanding presence at the Lagos championships.
