India lead medals table at C’wealth Fencing Championships

India is currently leading the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos, Nigeria, having secured five gold medals out of the nine events decided so far. The competition, now in its third day, sees England in second place with two golds, followed by Cyprus and hosts Nigeria, each with one gold medal.

Nigeria's sole gold came from a historic performance by 17-year-old Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson in the men's U-23 epee event. This victory marks Nigeria's first-ever gold medal at the Commonwealth Championships, adding a significant achievement for the host nation. India's overall medal count stands at seven silver and 12 bronze medals, while England has added one silver and five bronze to their tally. Australia rounds out the top five with one silver and one bronze.

The atmosphere at the Rugby School Nigeria has been described as energetic, with the clash of blades, cheering supporters, and colorful flags creating a vibrant spectacle. A notable development this year is the debut of wheelchair fencing as a medal event, marking a new era of inclusivity after its demonstration in London in 2022.
