India reaffirms commitment to rules-based global trade at WTO Trade Policy Review

India has strongly reaffirmed its dedication to a rules-based, transparent, and non-discriminatory multilateral trading system during its eighth Trade Policy Review at the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal underscored India's increasing significance in global commerce. He detailed the nation's proactive engagement with the global trading system, emphasizing efforts to bolster trade relationships through an expanding network of trade agreements. Agrawal also pointed to India's liberalized foreign direct investment (FDI) regime and its continued support for cooperation among developing nations as key strategies.

The Department of Commerce, via a social media post, described India as a "trusted and reliable partner" in promoting inclusive global growth. The Trade Policy Review mechanism allows WTO member countries to scrutinize individual members' trade policies and assess their impact on the global trading system.

India's participation in this review occurs amidst significant global trade shifts, driven by geopolitical uncertainties, evolving supply chains, and changing trade policies worldwide. The government used the opportunity to highlight its expanding role in international commerce and reiterate its commitment to a multilateral trading framework founded on transparency and non-discrimination.

Furthermore, India's focus on South-South cooperation, aimed at fostering economic and technical collaboration among developing countries for more inclusive growth, was a key point. The government stated that India's global trade approach centers on strengthening partnerships and cultivating a more inclusive trading environment, reinforcing its commitment to international trade institutions and a stable, predictable global trading landscape.
