India’s education minister bows to pressure, resigns after youth-led protests

India's Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned amid intense pressure from mass youth-led protests that erupted over a series of irregularities in potentially life-altering examinations. Thousands of young people mobilized across the country, spearheaded by the social media-driven Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), calling for a fundamental overhaul of the education system and Pradhan's ouster. The protests, centered at the Jantar Mantar site in New Delhi, saw police use tear gas and batons against demonstrators attempting to march to parliament.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Pradhan expressed his pain over the recent events, stating, "This is not a matter of personal prestige for me." He confirmed that his resignation letter had been submitted to the prime minister. The CJP declared that their demands had been met following another round of talks with the government, announcing the cessation of their protests. Pradhan's resignation came just before a scheduled third round of discussions.

The movement has broadened to encompass concerns about unemployment, opportunities for young people, and criticisms of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's governance style, marking one of the most significant challenges to his administration since his 2024 re-election.
