India's Food Authority Bans Plastic Packaging for Pan Masala, Mandates Tin or Glass

India's Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) has issued a ban on the use of plastic packaging for pan masala, a popular chewing tobacco product. The directive mandates that only tin and glass containers can be used for packaging pan masala, signaling a significant shift in the industry's material choices.

The FSSAI's order explicitly prohibits packaging materials such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), synthetic polymers, and copolymers or laminates. This move is intended to enhance food safety by ensuring that the packaging does not leach harmful chemicals into the product, thereby protecting consumer health.

Pan masala, a mixture of areca nut, catechu, and lime, is widely consumed in India and other parts of South Asia. The product's traditional packaging has often involved plastic or multi-layered materials, raising concerns about potential health risks associated with prolonged exposure to these substances. The new regulations aim to address these concerns directly by enforcing the use of inert and safer packaging alternatives.
