India's Jaishankar offers help to end war in Ukraine

India is ready to help end the war in Ukraine, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said on arriving in Kyiv for what Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the first dedicated bilateral visit by an Indian foreign minister to Ukraine.

“If India can be of any help, in any manner, we are there,” Jaishankar said at a joint media appearance with Sybiha.

Sybiha welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to move from an endless war toward an end to the conflict. “India is a global power and we welcome Prime Minister Modi’s call to move from an endless war towards an end to the war. Ukraine stands ready for diplomacy,” he wrote on X.

The visit came more than a week after Jaishankar traveled to Moscow for the 27th session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation. He met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and President Vladimir Putin during that trip. New Delhi has faced pressure from Kyiv’s Western partners over its cooperation with Moscow, a longstanding Indian ally.

Sybiha said the Kyiv visit took place as Russian attacks against Ukrainian cities, port infrastructure and civilian shipping were escalating. He said the capital remained under constant attack and thanked Jaishankar for making the visit. The ministers discussed restoring freedom of navigation in the Black Sea, global food security and cooperation in infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, technological innovation and digitalization.
