India seeks to join French-led 6th-gen fighter jet program

India is actively pursuing participation in France's Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program, a multinational initiative focused on developing 6th-generation fighter aircraft. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has informed a Parliamentary Standing Committee that "concerted" efforts are underway to co-join this advanced aerial combat development project.

The MoD's roadmap, detailed in the Standing Committee on Defence's Twenty-Fifth Report, signals India's ambition to leapfrog current 4.5 and 5th generation fighter jet technology. This strategic move aims to secure next-generation aerial combat capabilities and position India at the forefront of advanced military aviation.

This development occurs alongside significant progress in the potential acquisition of 114 Rafale fighter jets from France. France has submitted its comprehensive technical and commercial proposal for this deal, which crucially includes substantial local manufacturing of the multi-role combat aircraft within India. This aspect is expected to foster significant industrial collaboration and technological transfer.

The proposal is currently under review by India's Defence Ministry and Air Force. Key considerations include the integration of Indian weapons systems, such as Astra air-to-air missiles, and ensuring a significant indigenous content in the aircraft. The deal anticipates that French manufacturers will produce 94 of the 114 aircraft in India, involving major French aerospace companies and potentially generating substantial opportunities for Indian industrial players like Tata and Larsen & Toubro.
