Indonesia earthquake death toll rises to 100; rescue efforts enter 10th day

A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck eastern Indonesia has resulted in at least 100 fatalities, with over 1,600 individuals injured. The disaster, which occurred on the 15th of the month, has seen rescue operations continue for ten days. The quake and subsequent thousands of aftershocks have devastated the East Nusa Tenggara province, leaving more than 73,000 homes destroyed and forcing the evacuation of approximately 180,000 people.

Suharyanto, head of Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency, confirmed the rising death toll due to continuous fatalities among the injured. Aid is being distributed via helicopters, trucks, and motorcycles. This earthquake marks the deadliest seismic event in Indonesia since a magnitude 5.6 earthquake in West Java in 2022 claimed hundreds of lives.

Indonesia, an archipelago nation with a population of 290 million, is situated on the "Pacific Ring of Fire." This geologically active zone, located at the junction of tectonic plates, experiences frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, underscoring the nation's ongoing vulnerability to such natural disasters.
