Indonesia plans major redesign of GBK Sports Complex in Jakarta

Indonesia's Minister of State Secretary, Prasetyo Hadi, has revealed plans to overhaul the iconic Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Sports Complex in Senayan, Jakarta. The ambitious redesign aims to transform the entire complex, focusing on both sports facilities and commercial areas.

The vision includes integrating the complex with the Jakarta Convention Center and adding modern amenities, including hotels and advanced sports facilities. The goal is to position GBK as a premier venue for international sporting events beyond just football, such as aquatic sports and tennis.

"Our hope is that in the future, this will become the New Icon of Jakarta," Prasetyo added. To facilitate this transformation, the government has revoked several unexecuted work contracts. The Ministry is actively refining the new design and seeking potential investors, both domestic and international, with BUMN entities like InJourney being considered.

The GBK complex, originally built for the 1962 Asian Games under President Sukarno, has long symbolized Indonesia's national pride and development. It has undergone various renovations over the years, notably before the 2018 Asian Games. Most recently, the state reclaimed the Hotel Sultan area within the complex after decades of private ownership.
