Indonesia Reviews Citizenship Fee Hikes After Public Objections

Indonesia's Ministry of Law and Human Rights is initiating a review of the recently increased fees for Indonesian citizenship and the naturalization of foreign nationals. This move comes in response to public objections and feedback regarding the new tariffs stipulated in Government Regulation (PP) No. 30 of 2026.

Minister of Law and Human Rights, Supratman Andi Agtas, stated that the review is a direct response to the concerns raised by the public. He emphasized that the regulation was not hastily implemented for profit but rather as a necessary adjustment. "However, we will study and review the recent increases. I will hold an internal meeting soon with the Director General of AHU and the Director General of Intellectual Property," Supratman announced, noting that the Directorate General of AHU, particularly concerning citizenship matters, is currently a focal point of discussion.

The proposed fee hikes, which were initially submitted by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights to President Prabowo Subianto, have sparked considerable debate. The ministry plans to hold an evaluation meeting to consolidate public input before presenting any potential recommendations to the President. Supratman clarified that while ministerial decisions can adjust fees, potentially down to zero, changes to a Government Regulation itself require a more formal process.

According to the annex of PP 30/2026, the fee for citizenship by application from a foreign national has been set at Rp75 million per application, an increase from the previous Rp50 million under PP 45/2024. Citizenship by marriage now costs Rp25 million, up from Rp15 million. The ministry acknowledges that any perceived errors in the regulation are its responsibility, and the review process aims to address these concerns transparently.
