Indonesian Authorities Uncover Vape Smuggling Ring Disguised as Snack Packaging

Indonesian authorities have dismantled a sophisticated vape smuggling operation that brought illicit substances from Malaysia into Batam, Riau Islands. The National Narcotics Agency (BNN), in collaboration with the Directorate General of Customs and Excise, seized a significant quantity of drugs and vape cartridges, arresting six individuals.

The syndicate employed a clever ruse, repackaging vape cartridges containing etomidate and other narcotics into packaging that mimicked snack wrappers. This elaborate disguise was intended to deceive customs officials and facilitate the distribution of these harmful substances to the general public, particularly young people.

This is a very neat form of disguise. The goal is clear, to deceive officers and distribute to the general public, especially young people.

During the operation, officers confiscated 170 etomidate-filled vape cartridges, 12 vials of etomidate, over a kilogram of MDMA powder, methamphetamine, ecstasy pills, and other illicit substances. The total economic value of the seized items is estimated at Rp5.1 billion (approximately $3.4 million USD). BNN estimates this bust could prevent around 13,964 individuals from drug abuse.

Six suspects have been arrested and face severe penalties under Indonesia's Narcotics Law, with potential sentences including the death penalty or life imprisonment. Authorities are still searching for two foreign nationals believed to be the main suppliers. BNN urges the public to be vigilant about the origins of vape products, warning that etomidate is a dangerous substance that can cause sudden loss of consciousness and be fatal.
