Indonesian Court Dismisses Fake Diploma Case Against President Widodo

A Jakarta court has halted proceedings in a case alleging that Indonesian President Joko Widodo possesses a fake diploma. The Timur District Court accepted a preliminary objection, known as an 'eksepsi,' filed by the defendant, Tifauziah Tyassuma, widely referred to as Dr. Tifa.

Presiding judge Christina Endarwati announced the ruling, stating that the prosecutor's indictment in case number 301/Pid.Sus/2026/PN Jkt.Tim was not meticulous and was therefore null and void. Consequently, the court ordered the case files to be returned to the Public Prosecutor's Office, and the legal costs associated with the proceedings will be covered by the state.

Previously, Dr. Tifa was charged with criminal defamation and slander against President Widodo concerning the allegations of a fake diploma. The indictment was read out on July 2, 2026. This case is separate from a related legal process involving Tifa's colleague, KMRT Roy Suryo, whose case is still in the pre-trial phase.

The court's decision to dismiss the case at this preliminary stage means that the prosecution will not be able to proceed to the evidence presentation phase in a trial. The ruling effectively quashes the charges against Dr. Tifa based on procedural grounds related to the indictment's validity.
