Indonesian doctor dies by suicide, allegedly after DPRD member's intimidation

A doctor in Timor Tengah Utara, Indonesia, identified as Eliza Princila Utami Pakaenoni, also known as Dokter Icha, died by suicide. Her family alleges that severe depression, stemming from intimidation by a member of the local DPRD (Regional People's Representative Council), led to her death. The Bupati of Timor Tengah Utara, Yosep Falentinus Delasalle Kebo, stated that Dokter Icha's death has revealed long-standing issues with some DPRD members.

"This incident involving Dr. Icha has opened a tightly shut curtain," Yosep said. He described a pattern of disruptive behavior by certain DPRD members during official recesses, often exacerbated by alcohol consumption. The Bupati pledged the local government's support for the family's efforts to seek justice.

The alleged intimidation occurred while Dokter Icha was treating a child who had been bitten by a green pit viper at the IGD of RS Leona Kefamenanu. Two DPRD members, Therensius Lazakar and Norbertus Tubani, reportedly entered the emergency room and spoke to Icha in a harsh tone. The patient was reportedly Therensius's nephew. Family spokesperson Fabianus Banase confirmed that witnesses and medical staff reported the two DPRD members smelled of alcohol during the confrontation. The family also possesses photographic evidence of the incident.

According to the victim's uncle, Victor Manbait, Dokter Icha was visibly distressed and crying following the confrontation. She was later found in a weak state at her residence and subsequently died. The incident has sparked outrage and highlighted concerns about the conduct of some local officials.
