Indonesian minister condemns bullying after school bomb incident

Indonesia's Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai has called for a rejection of all forms of bullying in educational settings, following an incident where a bomb exploded at MAN 3 Padang in West Sumatra. Pigai suggested that bullying may have been a contributing factor to the explosion.

Pigai emphasized that combating bullying requires the attention of all parties, not just the government. He revealed that he himself has experienced bullying and racism, stating, "I myself am a victim of racism, let alone the people? The people and I are victims of racism." He noted that racist remarks against him often appear on social media, frequently from anonymous accounts.

The minister asserted his long-standing stance against bullying but criticized institutions responsible for addressing online harassment for not working optimally. Pigai questioned why these bodies, including the police despite his status as a state official, do not act more decisively against online racism. He called for greater societal, community, individual, and family involvement in eradicating bullying.

Authorities have arrested a 17-year-old student, identified as R, in connection with the low-explosive bomb that detonated at the school. Police reported that the suspect allegedly resorted to building the bomb as a response to being a victim of bullying. Densus 88 spokesperson Kombes Mayndra Eka Wardhana added that the perpetrator learned to make explosives online, inspired by a similar incident at SMAN 72 Jakarta in 2025. Investigators are still probing the motive.
