Indonesian Parties React to Kaesang Pangarep's 2029 Election Plans in Central Java

Kaesang Pangarep, the youngest son of Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Chairman of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), has announced his intention to compete in the 2029 legislative elections in Central Java. This move has drawn reactions from major political parties, including Golkar and PAN.

Golkar Party's Secretary-General, Muhammad Sarmuji, expressed a measured view, suggesting that Pangarep's candidacy would not significantly alter the electoral landscape. He emphasized that legislative races are competitive nationwide and that Golkar is prepared for any challenge, highlighting the party's proven technocratic capabilities.

Conversely, PAN Deputy Chairman Saleh Partaonan Daulay believes Pangarep has a strong likelihood of winning if he contests from the Surakarta or Central Java V electoral district. Daulay noted that Pangarep, being a native of Surakarta and with his father's political background in the region, has likely calculated his chances carefully. He acknowledged that while competition will be fierce across many regions, Central Java and East Java are expected to be particularly intense.

The Central Java V electoral district, encompassing Surakarta, Boyolali, Klaten, and Sukoharjo, is anticipated to be a highly contested area in the 2029 elections. In the 2024 elections, this district vied for eight seats, with Puan Maharani securing the most votes. Pangarep's announcement during a PSI regional meeting in Surakarta signals his early preparations for this significant political undertaking.
