Indonesian Party PKB Gathers Pesantren to Tackle Sexual Violence

The recent surge in sexual violence cases, particularly within the hallowed grounds of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), has prompted a significant response from the National Awakening Party (PKB). Recognizing the deep distress and the numerous appeals received from pesantren across Indonesia, PKB is convening a national meeting involving 250 institutions. This initiative, scheduled for May 18-19 in Jakarta, is not merely a symbolic gesture; it is a crucial step towards confronting a deeply troubling issue that has shaken public trust. The party understands that many pesantren, despite their commitment to education, are ill-equipped to handle the complexities of sexual violence cases, often lacking the necessary legal and psychological support. Therefore, the meeting will serve as a vital forum for sharing experiences, discussing psychological impacts, and collaboratively seeking effective solutions. Crucially, PKB is also bringing together key government bodies, including the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection, and the National Police, to ensure a multi-faceted approach.
