Indonesian Police Investigate Ferry Fire, Question Seven Witnesses After Five Fatalities

The East Java Regional Police's Water and Air Patrol Directorate has launched an investigation into the fire that severely damaged the KMP Mutiara Sentosa II passenger ferry in the waters north of Sumenep Regency. The probe is currently in its initial stages, with investigators focusing on understanding the sequence of events leading to the incident.

As part of the preliminary investigation, police have questioned seven witnesses. Directorate Chief Kombes Arman Asmara indicated that the number of witnesses could increase as the investigation progresses. The police plan to employ Scientific Crime Investigation methods to meticulously examine the ferry's operational procedures from its departure to the moment the fire broke out.

"The investigation begins with an examination of the vehicles and passengers who boarded at the port before the ship departed. Every responsible party involved in that process will be questioned," Asmara explained. Investigators are also considering reviewing the issuance of the sailing permit (SPB), examining passenger and cargo manifests, and gathering statements from survivors and victims.

While the identities of the seven witnesses remain undisclosed, Asmara assured that the investigation is being handled thoroughly by the Sub-Directorate of Law Enforcement. The goal is to uncover the cause of the fire clearly and comprehensively. The KMP Mutiara Sentosa II, en route from Surabaya to Makassar, caught fire on Sunday, August 2nd. Basarnas reported that out of 238 people on board, 233 were rescued, while five individuals tragically lost their lives. The search and rescue operation was officially closed on Tuesday, August 4th.
