Indonesian Police Officer Detained in $1.9 Million Social Aid Corruption Case

A police officer in Indonesia's South Labuhanbatu regency has been detained in connection with a corruption case involving social aid funds. Bripka YML, 31, is accused of mismanaging approximately $1.9 million in funds designated for social welfare recipients during the 2024 fiscal year.

The determination of suspects was made after investigators obtained at least two sufficient pieces of evidence. Besides YML, there are five other suspects who have also been detained. YML is a police officer and also the son-in-law of the former Regent of South Labuhanbatu.

The investigation by the South Labuhanbatu Prosecutor's Office revealed significant irregularities in the program. These included activities not conducted according to regulations, invalid recipient data, funds disbursed for non-existent activities, the use of fictitious receipts, and inflated prices for procured goods.

YML, who is also the son-in-law of the former regent of South Labuhanbatu, allegedly played a crucial role in selecting vendors and was involved from the procurement stage through to payment processing. Prosecutors stated that his familial connection to the former regent likely provided him with easy access to relevant government agencies.

However, based on the results of the public accountant's audit, state losses of around Rp1.9 billion, or almost half of the total budget disbursed, were found.

Authorities have identified seven suspects in the case. Six have been detained, while one suspect passed away in May 2026. The case is being prosecuted under relevant corruption laws, with the investigation highlighting systemic issues in the management of social aid funds.
