INEC Announces Restoration of Constituencies in Delta, Kogi

Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reinstated four State House of Assembly constituencies in Delta and Kogi states, reversing a previous suppression. This action comes in direct response to court judgments mandating the restoration of these electoral districts.

INEC National Commissioner Mohammed Haruna announced that three constituencies have been restored in Delta State: Abraka, Isoko North II, and Ughelli South II. Additionally, one constituency, Yagba West II, has been restored in Kogi State. These decisions aim to comply with judicial directives and ensure broader representation.

The commission has set a timeline for political parties to conduct primaries for these newly restored constituencies, scheduling them between August 21st and 25th, 2026. This period aligns with the primaries for upcoming bye-elections in other vacant constituencies across Gombe, Bauchi, Delta, and Kano states, with those elections slated for September 19th, 2026.

INEC affirmed that all other timelines and activities outlined in the revised timetable for the 2027 general election will apply to the restored constituencies. The commission urged political parties to submit their primary schedules to INEC in advance of the designated dates, reiterating its commitment to credible, inclusive, and transparent electoral processes.
