INEC prepares real-time election tracker as voter register nears 100 million

Nigeria’s electoral commission is preparing a real-time system to monitor every state’s readiness for the 2027 general elections as the national voter register approaches 100 million.

The Independent National Electoral Commission said the tracker will give its leadership instant updates on logistics, recruitment and training of temporary election staff, technology and other preparations across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan announced the plan in Lagos during a two-day strategic workshop for administrative secretaries.

The workshop is expected to produce a standardised Excel-based Administrative Secretary Master Operational Tracker Template. The template will connect to INEC’s Election Monitoring and Support Centre dashboard and its Election Project Plan.

Amupitan said INEC had historically lacked a dedicated, uniform system for monitoring the operational duties of administrative secretaries nationwide. The new arrangement will give resident electoral commissioners, supervising national commissioners, the commission’s secretary and headquarters “instant visibility” into preparations.

The tracker will cover the distribution of election materials, training of ad hoc personnel and general state-level readiness. Amupitan said the goal was to move away from the commission’s traditional last-minute approach, describing the change as replacing “reactive panic with proactive management.”

He also said continuous voter registration, conducted in three phases from August 2025 through July 2026, produced 10,772,421 new registrants. The figure remains subject to verification through the Automated Biometric Identification System. INEC is also reviewing logistics and materials management, electoral technology, ad hoc staff optimisation and financial compliance.
