Infantino's latest plan: exploit World Cups even further commercially

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is proposing a radical plan to create a new entity, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), to commercially exploit the rights of men's, women's, and club World Cups. The proposal, revealed by the Financial Times, aims to raise $4.2 billion by selling approximately 20% of FFE's shares to private investors. This move has drawn sharp criticism from various international football figures and bodies, including British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and the European Commission, who have expressed dismay. According to FIFA's statement, the plan is intended to benefit all 211 member states, with annual contributions potentially rising from $8 million to $20 million per country between 2027 and 2030, and further increases in subsequent cycles. FIFA insists that control over FFE and football matters will remain with the organization, emphasizing the plan's goal to promote football development globally. However, the lack of prior consultation with member associations has caused significant resentment. Infantino, seeking re-election in March 2027, appears to be leveraging potential increased revenue for member states as a strategy to secure his position. Member associations have until September 19 to vote on the proposal.
