Inheritance disputes: When sibling bonds break over land

The increasing value of land, even in rural areas, is transforming ancestral properties into flashpoints for sibling conflict in Vietnam. What was once a source of connection and a place where parents raised their children is now, due to rising prices, becoming the cause of arguments and even physical altercations.

A recent case in Phú Thọ province exemplifies this trend. The parents of five children, including two sons, passed away without leaving a will or significant assets beyond a nearly 500-square-meter plot of land. In many rural families, sons are traditionally expected to handle ancestral worship and are sometimes favored in inheritance.

In this instance, the two sons initially proposed dividing the land, with the elder son receiving a larger portion (300 sqm) in exchange for taking on the responsibility of ancestral rites. The younger son, however, felt this was unfair, arguing that all children are equal and should share equally, especially given the land's high market value, which could translate to billions of Vietnamese dong.

His demand for a larger share, even offering to take on the worship duties himself, was rejected by his elder brother. This disagreement escalated into heated arguments, insults, and eventually a physical fight where the younger brother allegedly attacked the elder with a stick, causing a broken arm. The land intended to foster familial ties became the catalyst for deep-seated animosity and physical harm.

Months later, with the intervention of relatives, a compromise was reached: the land was divided almost equally, with each brother receiving close to 250 sqm. While a formal resolution was achieved, the emotional cost was immense. The brothers became estranged, their relationship fractured beyond repair, demonstrating how disputes over inheritance can irrevocably damage sibling bonds.
