Insecurity, poor governance threaten Nigeria partnership – UK MPs

A report by the UK Parliament’s International Development Committee has issued a stark warning: Nigeria's development partnership with the United Kingdom is at risk of being undermined by significant obstacles. The committee highlights humanitarian needs, pervasive insecurity, political instability, and a lack of investor confidence as major threats to the bilateral relationship.

The UK entered into a strategic partnership with Nigeria in 2024, aiming to foster shared objectives and strengthen ties. This collaboration was envisioned as a "grand strategic bet" for the UK, predicated on the expectation that targeted support would boost Nigeria's economy and reduce its reliance on foreign aid. However, the committee cautions that these mutual benefits may remain elusive without a more comprehensive strategy from the UK government.

Multiple obstacles risk undermining the partnership. If the government does not present a more wide-ranging and strategic plan to assist Nigeria in achieving significant reductions in humanitarian need, displacement and instability, there is very little chance that it will reap the desired mutual benefits of the strategic partnership.

The report emphasizes that Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation and third-largest economy, possesses the potential to take greater ownership of its humanitarian challenges. The committee is calling for transparency from the UK government regarding its specific actions to help Nigeria assume this responsibility. Furthermore, it recommends the establishment of a clear monitoring framework by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to track the implementation of a humanitarian-development-peace nexus approach within Nigeria. The committee also stressed the need to review and mitigate risks, including the severe humanitarian situation, which one witness described as a "forgotten crisis."
