Instagram Rolls Out New Safety Feature in Hong Kong: Parental Alerts for Risky Searches

Instagram is implementing a new safety measure in Hong Kong designed to protect young users by involving their parents. The feature alerts parents when teenagers repeatedly search for terms related to suicide or self-harm on the platform.

According to the South China Morning Post, Meta, the parent company of Instagram, will send notifications to registered contact information, including email, text messages, and WhatsApp, if a minor's account shows a pattern of searching for sensitive terms. This aims to prompt parental intervention and conversation.

Philip Chua, Meta's Head of Public Policy for Asia Pacific, emphasized the importance of balancing youth protection with parental involvement. He noted that the platform already directs users searching for sensitive content to relevant counseling and support organizations in Hong Kong.

Parents who receive these alerts will also be provided with expert resources offering guidance on how to initiate conversations with their children about difficult topics. This initiative is part of Meta's broader efforts to enhance safety for younger users on its platforms.
