Investigation launched into Yeni Parti Gaziantep chairman over misleading information claims

An official investigation has been launched against Erhan Deniz Güngen, the Provincial Chairman of the Yeni Parti in Gaziantep, Turkey. The Gaziantep Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has accused Güngen of "publicly disseminating misleading information."

The investigation follows a knife attack on Melih Meriç, a Member of Parliament for the Yeni Parti, by Seydi Ahmet Keleş, the former CHP Oğuzeli District Chairman. Keleş was apprehended following the incident. On August 19, Keleş and his son, Hakan Keleş, were taken into custody, with the son reportedly detained for allegedly concealing evidence.

In response to the attack, Erhan Deniz Güngen issued a statement denouncing the incident. "Unfortunately, this attack is an attack on democracy," Güngen said. He characterized the Yeni Parti as "the hope of the hopeless, the solution for the helpless" during a "painful period."

Güngen asserted that those pursuing "positions and status" were behind the attack but expressed confidence in the party's resilience. "We stand firm with our organization and will carry our party to power. We will make it the number one party in Gaziantep," he declared. He added that the attack would only serve to "spur us on" to work harder and maintain unity within the party structure.
