Iran has accused Ukraine of attacking an Iranian merchant ship in the Caspian Sea, an incident that resulted in the death of one sailor and injuries to another. Iranian authorities have vowed retaliation, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declaring the attack "cannot go unanswered."

According to Iran's Foreign Ministry, the attack, which caused an explosion on the vessel, demonstrates the "continuous irrational and hostile stance" of the Ukrainian regime towards Iran. The ministry emphasized that the Islamic Republic has "never intervened in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine."

However, Ukrainian intelligence services claimed responsibility for drone attacks targeting "freight ships under international sanctions that were used for military cargo transport between Iran and Russia." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously mentioned achieving "very solid results with long-range attacks in the Caspian Sea, targeting ships used for military cargo transport involving Iran."

Iran summoned the chargé d'affaires of the Ukrainian embassy in Tehran to the Foreign Ministry to protest the "hostile and criminal act."
