Iran and Oman Negotiate Opening Navigation Corridor in Strait of Hormuz; Seek to Reactivate Maritime Transit

Iran and Oman are actively engaged in high-level discussions to establish a temporary navigation corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global energy transport. The initiative aims to regulate maritime traffic in the vital waterway, which has increasingly become a flashpoint in Middle Eastern conflicts.

During a meeting in Tehran, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Omani counterpart, Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah, explored a phased framework for advancing these talks. According to a joint statement released by Oman, this framework includes creating a joint, temporary navigation corridor and initiating a project to clear mines from the strait.

Technical negotiations are set to continue with the objective of establishing a permanent navigation corridor, defining its future administration, and creating mechanisms for information exchange, traffic management, and security services. Oman's foreign minister expressed hope for a swift announcement of the temporary corridor, while acknowledging that a permanent solution and future management of the strait would be addressed in due course. Both nations emphasized the importance of joint discussions with other littoral states of the Gulf waters.
